Fifteen Feet Beneath Manhattan by Michael Silverstein

"Nowadays, you can't turn on the TV without some talking head telling you about the economy. Yet, in a world overrun by 'analysts,' only one man has the guts, the brains, and, quite frankly, the poetry to put it all in perspective.That man is Michael Silverstein... Silverstein is a true intellectual." — Gersh Kuntzman, The New York Post

"Few people have found much to laugh about in the stock market this year. Michael Silverstein is the exception. The Bard of the Bourse can find humor in losing money, globalization and stock options." — USA Today

Watching The Jobs
Drift Overseas

My company just told me that it’s in an earnings squeeze,
In consequence it’s moving lots of good jobs overseas;
This added to an endless stream of news that didn’t please,
Including an announcement of a wage and bennie freeze.

I’m sure not feeling cheery,
The job mart’s gotten hairy,
I’m leery, spooked and wary,
And each day it gets more scary.

I kind of understand why manufacturing’s offshore,
Unskilled wages in some places are too dirt cheap to ignore;
And who cares ‘bout telemarketing, those gigs are such a bore,
It’s the export of white collar work that’s making me so sore.

I’m sure not feeling cheery,
The job mart’s gotten hairy,
I’m leery, spooked and wary,
And each day it gets more scary.

When times get tough I’m not a guy who waffles, weaves or ducks,
And I sure don’t think that companies should shun those extra bucks;
But when squeezing extra dollars means we’re treated all like shucks,
It sorta, kinda, makes me think—A world market really sucks.

I’m sure not feeling cheery,
The job mart’s gotten hairy,
I’m leery, spooked and wary,
And each day it gets more scary.
