After years of falling short, the U.S. military is finally meeting its recruitment goals. That's good news in a way. But on the other hand....

Though recessions may empty a good many cups
One kind of recruiter on downturns well sups
I speak of recruiters now puffing the ranks
Of those outfits deploying ships, airplanes and tanks.
Now I don't wish to put down the fine men and women
For whom patriotism is simply a given
But in truth it's depressing when the best jobs du jour
Ain't in peaceful pursuits but in training for war.
