Democrats in the Senate finally have their own budget plan. It would reduce debt by $4 trillion over 10 years, largely with extra taxes on the nation's top 1 percent earners rather than through excessive cuts in programs for the poor, education, health, and the elderly. If only this plan had appeared sooner...

The Saner Budget Fix

For long months ranters on the right
Have shaped the budget making fight
While Dems seemed strangely out of touch
Their only plea: "Don't cut too much."

Now Dems in Congress have a plan
That transcends the no taxes ban
It trillions trims without the gore
From stiffing kids, the old, the poor.

The budget burden pain it switches
From poor and middle to the richest
Polls show most people think this saner
Politically it's a no-brainer

Alas Republicans have sworn
No pain by rich folks will be borne
So o'er the edge what now can halt
Our fearful plunge into default?

"Nowadays, you can't turn on the TV without some talking head telling you about the economy. Yet, in a world overrun by 'analysts,' only one man has the guts, the brains, and, quite frankly, the poetry to put it all in perspective. That man is Michael Silverstein... Silverstein is a true intellectual." — Gersh Kuntzman, The New York Post

"Few people have found much to laugh about in the stock market this year. Michael Silverstein is the exception. The Bard of the Bourse can find humor in losing money, globalization and stock options." — USA Today
