You might think Wall Streeters would be a little shy about flaunting their wealth while so many other Americans are suffering so many economic pangs. You'd be wrong. In the just ended third quarter, except for a government clunker program that caused a brief car sale blip, overall consumer spending continued to fall. But spending on luxury goods by the overall $250,000 per annum crowd — a goodly percentage of them Wall Streeters — soared 29 percent, according to a recent survey. Well played, Wall Streeters! This poem's for you...

Returning To
The Trough

Soon after their world shaking rending
The renders restarted their spending
Dispensing with further pretending
That their pain with our own was a'blending.

For awhile a nasty firestorm
Threatened real market reform
Creating a new Wall Street norm
That their take home pay would transform.

But they've lobbied down hard this cruel trimming
And their fortunes are once again brimming
While the rest of us see futures dimming
To the joys of the markets they're hymning.

"Nowadays, you can't turn on the TV without some talking head telling you about the economy. Yet, in a world overrun by 'analysts,' only one man has the guts, the brains, and, quite frankly, the poetry to put it all in perspective. That man is Michael Silverstein... Silverstein is a true intellectual." — Gersh Kuntzman, The New York Post

"Few people have found much to laugh about in the stock market this year. Michael Silverstein is the exception. The Bard of the Bourse can find humor in losing money, globalization and stock options." — USA Today
