A Dyspeptic's Guide To Contemporary American Politics (In Verse)

Fifteen Feet Beneath Manhattan by Michael Silverstein

"Nowadays, you can't turn on the TV without some talking head telling you about the economy. Yet, in a world overrun by 'analysts,' only one man has the guts, the brains, and, quite frankly, the poetry to put it all in perspective. That man is Michael Silverstein... Silverstein is a true intellectual." — Gersh Kuntzman, The New York Post

"Few people have found much to laugh about in the stock market this year. Michael Silverstein is the exception. The Bard of the Bourse can find humor in losing money, globalization and stock options." — USA Today
More Of What The Critics Are Saying
About Silverstein's Verse

The first President Bush coined the term "voodoo economics" to describe proposals to cut taxes dramatically at the same time government spending was increasing dramatically in hopes the former would generate enough new revenues to pay for the latter without triggering awful down-the-road consequences.

The current President Bush seems to take a more favorable view of these nostrums. His heroic efforts to advance such an agenda put me in mind of William Ernest Henley’s "Invictus." To herald the return of voodoo economics, my rendering of "Invictus" is titled "Redictus."

Redictus

Faced with humongous deficits,
Certain to grow from year to year,
I gladly rack up all these chits,
I’m unperturbed by doubts or fear.

Economists may wince and holler,
Call deficits inflation’s fuel,
Point fingers at a weak’ning dollar,
Let others worry—me, I’m cool.

Beyond the current twists and bends
I see a future rich and bright,
Just cut the tax on dividends
And everything will turn out right.

Let critics cry, they matter not,
Let the markets slump and sputter,
I’m the one who owns the top slot,
I’m the guy who holds the rudder.
