Before the invasion of Iraq Colin Powell warned that if the U.S. went in, we would end up owning the place. We went in, so I guess we own it now. But as a voting, tax-paying part-owner, I have some questions for the board about the terms of acquisition...
Iraq: A Shareholder’s Queries
We own this rundown property,
The nation of Iraq.
We’ve paid a hefty price for it
And taken lots of flack.
The folks most keen to do the deal
And make the acquisition,
Still hype its many benefits,
They’re showing no contrition.
But as a voting shareholder
In Iraq’s new U.S. owner,
I wonder ‘sted of outright buy
Could we call this a loaner?
What were this deal’s contract terms,
Our bargain with Iraq?
Was it a short-term rental lease?
Can we give the damn thing back?
