A Dyspeptic's Guide To Contemporary American Politics (In Verse)

Fifteen Feet Beneath Manhattan by Michael Silverstein

"Nowadays, you can't turn on the TV without some talking head telling you about the economy. Yet, in a world overrun by 'analysts,' only one man has the guts, the brains, and, quite frankly, the poetry to put it all in perspective.That man is Michael Silverstein... Silverstein is a true intellectual." — Gersh Kuntzman, The New York Post

"Few people have found much to laugh about in the stock market this year. Michael Silverstein is the exception. The Bard of the Bourse can find humor in losing money, globalization and stock options." — USA Today

About Silverstein's Verse

Debt, Debt, Debt, Debt

The government in washington
Is swimming in red ink;
Many cities, states and counties totter
On the fiscal brink;
Against yen and pound and euros
Our poor dollars daily sink;
‘Twixt present wants and future needs
There’s a scary missing link.
Debt, debt, debt, debt,
Debt, debt, debt, debt.

These days we’re asked to just ignore
Those underfunded pensions;
Whether government or corp’rate it’s thought
Tastless to make mentions;
Though the shortfalls here are truly of
Astonishing dimensions;
Most officials seem determined not
To give it their attentions.
Debt, debt, debt, debt,
Debt, debt, debt, debt.

There is spending by the Pentagon
We aren’t even counting;
Voting seniors make it certain their
Own perks will keep on mounting;
When the Beltway does its shopping it
Don’t ask for deep discounting;
All that keeps this ship from sinking now
Is slick shell-game accounting.
Debt, debt, debt., debt,
Debt, debt, debt, debt.

What’s the thinking of the people who
This mount of debt do spawn?
Since the problems ain’t immediate
They treat it with a yawn;
They know commuppance here awaits
A very distant dawn;
It’s their bequest to their kiddie’s kids
Long after they are gone.
Debt, debt, debt, debt,
Debt, debt, debt, debt,
Debt, debt, debt, debt.
Debt......
