A Dyspeptic's Guide To Contemporary American Politics (In Verse)

Fifteen Feet Beneath Manhattan by Michael Silverstein

"Nowadays, you can't turn on the TV without some talking head telling you about the economy. Yet, in a world overrun by 'analysts,' only one man has the guts, the brains, and, quite frankly, the poetry to put it all in perspective. That man is Michael Silverstein... Silverstein is a true intellectual." — Gersh Kuntzman, The New York Post

"Few people have found much to laugh about in the stock market this year. Michael Silverstein is the exception. The Bard of the Bourse can find humor in losing money, globalization and stock options." — USA Today

About Silverstein's Verse

Stock markets have been falling for weeks. Then, this past Friday, they suddenly rocketed upward. What is one to make of this unexpected surge? Was it just a brief respite or the start of a new bull run? The verse that follows, "The Dead Dog Bounce," provides a needed perspective—in rhyme.

The Dead Dog Bounce

Wall Street’s mavens are like shamans, superstitious to the core
While they flaunt their high tech play toys, they place trust in older lore
They believe that certain patterns future stock moves will announce
Like an uptick ‘twixt two down slides that they call a dead dog bounce.

Dead dog bounce
Dead dog bounce
That they call a dead dog bounce.

See them gather ‘round trade entrails, seeking out the telltale sign
Watch them poke among the tea leaves, hoping thus some truth divine
Yarrow sticks they toss and ponder, seeking tips on which to pounce
Did that spike portend a rally? Was it just a dead dog bounce?

Dead dog bounce
Dead dog bounce
Was that spike a dead dog bounce?

All the news is so confusing, it’s no wonder nerves are shot
Recent weeks have been a torment, many haves became have not
Pros must know their market's beasties just to keep from getting trounced
Glean between a phoenix rising and a dog that just got bounced.

Dead dog bounce
Dead dog bounce
Buy the phoenix
Sell the bounce.
